WHO will lead the search for Centaur could be known within a month, following the evaluation of 11 national and international expressions of interest.

Premier Anna Bligh said yesterday: "Tenders closed this afternoon and this is a most pleasing outcome to have had such interest.

"The specifics of the 11 applications are commercial-in-confidence and are now the subject of evaluation."

The Australian Hospital Ship Centaur, ablaze with lights, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine south-east of Cape Moreton in May 1943. The Centaur caught fire and sank within minutes. Of the 322 persons on board, only 64 survived.

The Daily revealed earlier this month that one group interested in leading the search was Perth-based Gardline Marine Sciences, which provided technological support during the search for the Titanic.

Spokesman Simon Redford said the company had a broad range of experience in ocean mapping, and search and recovery work.

It has previously been engaged to search for, and recover, missing helicopters, aircraft and vessels, and it services off-shore drilling operations of the petroleum industry.

Ms Bligh said the evaluation of the 11 expressions of interest would be undertaken by the intergovernmental steering committee. …
