THE household is just about tennis-ed out following all those state tournaments and now the Australian Open and we have to say that, besides the great Dokic drama, one of the many pleasures - for us - was provided not by the big boom-boom world rankers but by that struggling Aussie journeyman Chris Guccione, with his second-round Open win over Frenchman Nicolas Devilder.

The long, lanky Guccione went into the match with an embarrassing Australian Open history, having lost his first-round encounters four years in a row - and all before his home town crowd.

Anyway, this year he made amends.

He power-served, he rallied, he backstroked and he dropshotted, all with a touch of genuine class for a straight sets victory.

And the crowd of 6000 or so loved every minute of it.

They cheered the big guy with the gawky charm every step of the way.

At one stage one of his powerful serves was called out.

Silence.... broken finally - and delightfully - by a stentorian voice from somewhere in the stands, "ARE YOU SURE?"

Still on sport, the Brits lately haven't had overmuch to crow about, but I suppose at such times half-a-loaf is better than none - which can be the only reason behind this piece, extracted from a report in the country's The Spectator:

"No look at 2008 is complete without due obeisance to the brilliant Wales Grand Slam Fifteen, who are playing dazzling rugby with a smile and flourish. Pure joy.

"This autumn they beat Australia, should have beaten South Africa and certainly won the first half against the All Blacks."
