YOU just mind your own business, I tell Miss Eight ... repeatedly.

"You make sure you do the right thing and don't worry about her," I say, referring to the antics of Miss Five.

Minutes later, I'm at it again.

"Don't worry about what she's doing, just do what you're supposed to be doing."

And again.

"It shouldn't matter to you what she's up to, just make sure you're doing what you're supposed to be doing."

Despite the almost incessant reminders, Miss Eight can't help herself.

She has to use Miss Five's behaviour as an excuse for why certain tasks can't be completed.

How much clearer can I make it?

"Don't dob" and "only worry about your business" have become my mantra ... until I want her to do exactly the opposite of what I've said.

About face

Miss Five used a tube of hard-to-clean-off pink zinc to colour on a mesh ribbon. Trouble was, she did it on a rug.

"Why didn't you tell me what she was up to?" I quizzed Miss Eight, who was sitting alongside pursuing her own activities. …
