SCHLOCK 'N' ROLL

LOOKING FOR WORST ROCK SONGS IN HISTORY

The recent Elton John/Billy Joel grueling pianos concert in Jacksonville naturally got me to thinking: What are the worst rock songs in history?

I blurted out the question here at the A.M. Stir Little Shop of Musical Horrors and a number of staffers blurted out their opinions.

"Billy Squier, 'The Stroke,' " one said.

"Steve Miller's 'Abracadabra,' " was another.

"Anything by Styx," someone else chimed in. (Amen, says I.)

Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" another suggested.

Personally, I think John's "Honky Cat" is worse, plus anything by Billy Joel (corny), James Taylor (syrupy) and the Doobie Brothers (pure cheese).

How about you? What songs, when stuck in your head, make you want to pierce your ears with metal spikes? What rock tunes do you think would be effective in the interrogation of terror suspects? E-mail your answers to jeff.brumley@jacksonville.com.

CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

NEW 'BY GEORGE' MOVEMENT TO SWEEP NATION, WORLD

Let's face it, nobody talks right no more. You don't gots to look far to see examples of that. Texting is destroying English with words like OMG, BRB and stuff.

Well, we just ain't gonna take it no more!

The Stir Center for Proper Linguistics and Talkin' Right is launching a new effort to bring back all them old words and sayings like what our parents used to say - and we need your help!

We're going to revive the daily usage of words like "neat," "swell" and "cool." Resurrected phrases will include "my goodness gracious," "my oh my," "right on" and "totally gnarly, dude."

It will be called the "By George Campaign" because we'll also be saying "By George" all the time. Like, "I ain't gonna stand for this here bad English no more, by George!"

Please send an e-mail to jeff.brumley@jacksonville.com to suggest the old-timey words and phrases you'd like to see resurface in daily speech. …
