I RECENTLY attended a briefing session held by BAN Waste on their views about the city council's waste strategy, which was useful and interesting.

I asked a number of questions, including asking whether BAN Waste had a preferred view of which technology option Newcastle should pursue in relation to processing waste in the city, once appropriate steps had been taken to reduce and re-use as much waste as possible.

They said they didn't have a preference, but advised that they saw incineration as the least suitable. I also asked whether, given their views, BAN Waste had opposed Gateshead and South Tyneside's plans for an incinerator south of the river. They told me they hadn't.

Finally, I asked whether BAN Waste supported landfill, and they suggested it should be considered as a possibility.
