"THE legislation came in this morning and they want it through in a day. They produced a booklet with all the details but unfortunately they didn't print enough for the Opposition."

Gympie's Wide Bay MP Warren Truss was explaining his opposition to the Rudd Government's latest economic stimulus package.

But he acknowledged the package has good points and says it will be popular, regardless of long term cost - with $950 of free money for most of us, more for some.

Parents will get back-to-school money, businesses will get tax breaks on new machinery, state governments will be partially bailed out of their failures to spend on schools and roads and many homeowners will get their places insulated for nothing.

Self-funded retirees, stung by interest rate cuts that wreck their plans, will get their $950 too, if they earned taxable income below the $100,000 ceiling last financial year.

So what is there not to like?

Mr Truss said yesterday the decades of paying it all back are what our children will hate us for, when they have to make the payments. …
