Club Members Clean Up on Fraser Island

OVERCAST skies and the odd shower or two couldn't dampen the spirits of the 730 four-wheel drive club members who turned up on Fraser Island over the Australia Day weekend to participate in the ninth annual clean-up organised by Four Wheel Drive Queensland, in conjunction with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

On the Sunday morning 260 vehicles spread out over the island to clean their nominated areas.

Rubbish and noxious plant removal in the worst affected areas was concentrated on, and after a massive effort the rubbish was taken to a central location to be removed in huge skip bins.

This year also featured a concerted effort towards recycling, with items being sorted before dumping.

The tally at the end of the day totalled 50 cubic metres of rubbish and about 25 cubic metres of recyclables.

On the Sunday night volunteers were treated to a barbecue and some live music, with the headline act being Tania Kernaghan who entertained the crowd and allowed the kids to jump up on stage and sing and dance with her. …
