Charity Race Day

LOCAL charity group, For the Sight of Others (FSOO), will host a race day at the Gladstone Turf Club today, from 11am - 5pm, to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation, which will assist with eye operations and treatment projects to people in remote areas in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Although the race day is expected to be the biggest one of the year, the major highlight of the day will be the "Shave for Sight" event taking place at 4pm.

Local resident Jason Skipper will have his hair cut, which he has been growing for the past 20 years, to raise money for the charity.

Although reluctant to lose his long locks, Mr Skipper said he was prepared to do so if it would "make life a little easier or happier for someone who has lost their vision".

From every $10 entry fee, $2 will be donated directly to the cause, as well as profits from food and drink sales throughout the day.

Not only will there be races on during the day, but charity organizer Pella Maltabes says the day will also have Fashions in the Field and food stalls, with extra seats and tables set up to accommodate the expected large crowd.

She said the charity race day would assist FSOO to reach their target of $250,000 by June 30 for the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Ms Maltabes said the charity had raised over $100,000 to date - equivalent to more than 10,000 life saving operations.

So far, a number of local groups and industries have supported the cause and Ms Maltabes is calling on other businesses and individuals to donate to the charity to ensure the target is reached.

Ms Maltabes can be contacted on 0427 781 464.
