INTERNET auction site eBay came under fire as the pair were jailed.

Robert Mochrie, defending Gary Beach, told the court nothing had been done by the site to stop the men's "established pattern" of counterfeit trade, adding: "It begs the question, quite frankly, when we're going to see a prosecution of eBay.

"This is a company drawing in this type of behaviour and not doing anything at all to protect the companies who are being ripped off such as Nike, Lacoste and Fred Perry."

Cleveland Police detectives said eBay had been very helpful and supplied information, but admitted that "eBay provides an easy outlet for people to sell stolen goods or counterfeit goods".

Detective Sergeant Nigel McCarthy said: "They don't seem to have any control measures within their industry to vet the property that's getting sold, otherwise I'm sure they could alert us to more cases."

Without eBay, he said, the Beaches would have to look to their local communities for custom but "eBay provides them with the facility to do it nationally or even globally". …
