WHEN Robbie Hayes crossed the line first in the state under-13 ironman last weekend, his mum's eyes filled with tears.

His dad could do little but shake his head in disbelief.

Robbie had done the near impossible at the Queensland Junior Surf Life Saving Championships at Mooloolaba.

About the middle of last year, the 13-year-old was struck down by a virus that perplexed doctors at Brisbane's Mater Children's Hospital.

Now the Matthew Flinders student and Noosa Heads junior lifesaver is an under-13 state champion in ironman, board rescue and the surf swim.

"When we took him to Noosa Hospital, they couldn't work out what was wrong with him so we brought him home," dad Michael said yesterday. "I had to carry him upstairs to his bed because nothing would stop the pain.

"My wife drove him down to the Mater at midnight that night - it was quite distressing not knowing what the problems was. …
