'I Planned to Give It Back'; Police Caught Man Who Took Car to Gin Gin

A DRUNK man who drove off in someone else's car planned to return the vehicle once he had finished with it, Bundaberg Magistrates Court has been told.

Dane Harley Devries has been in police custody since he was arrested in a car he drove to Gin Gin last Tuesday.

When police arrested Devries he was intoxicated and carrying a large butcher knife in his back pocket, police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens told the court on Friday.

"When asked why he was carrying the knife he said... 'there is some bad b******s out there who want to kill me'," Sgt Stevens told the court.

He said Devries had taken the car from a service station near Airport Drive after his wife's car, which was uninsured and unregistered, broke down on the way to Gin Gin.

The court heard that Devries needed to get to Gin Gin so he could borrow some money from his mother that would be used the register the car.

He took the car after the shop attendant in the service station told him they did not have jumper cables, the court heard. …
