CASINO Cavaliers captain Alan Nowlan has played every season of the LJ Hooker League's existence and has more trophies in the cabinet than he can poke a stick at, yet the 42-year-old keeps getting better with age.

Nowlan's 5-11 against Murwillumbah on Saturday was one of the stand-out performances on a day when ball dominated bat in most matches.

It's the second successive week that Nowlan has captured five wickets and follows on from his 5-36 against Tintenbar-East Ballina last weekend.

Nowlan has now captured 30 wickets for the season and is within striking distance of team-mate Mark Mison's league-leading 33 wickets.

The evergreen bowler is not quite sure why he's still bowling as well as he is at his age, but he's not about to change anything while it's working.

"I never thought I'd still be playing at this level, at this age," he said.

"I thought that I'd get to 37 or 38 and not be feeling as good as I am, and I don't know why. I used to stretch out a bit more, but now I don't tend to over-stretch things.

"If I feel OK, and they are coming out well, I'll bowl fast, but if not, then I just drop my pace back and bowl line and length."

Nowlan says he has 'heaps' of LJ Hooker League bowling trophies in his cabinet, and should he continue this vintage form, winning another title could be on the cards.

But he's just one cog in Casino's strong bowling attack and he counts himself fortunate that he's got Mison and Wade Sweeney to push him along.

Mison took 4-51 yesterday and Sweeney 1-24 as Casino skittled Murwillumbah for 99 in their match at Rabjones Oval, Murwillumbah.

"He (Mison) has always tried hard, but he just seems to be that little bit hungrier for it, and a little bit fitter and a little more experienced," Nowlan said. …
