Crash PC Is Named; Careless Driving Charge Brought

A CLEVELAND Police officer has been charged with causing the death of a young woman.

PC Thomas David Hart, 27, who is based in Stockton, was charged in relation to an accident in which a Cleveland Police van responding to an emergency call was in collision with a Peugeot 206 in Middlesbrough.

Aimee Welsh, 25, fromThornaby, died almost a month after the accident, which happened on the A1032 approach road near Newport Bridge at about 2.15am on October 18.

PC Hart was yesterday charged with causing death by careless driving following an Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) managed investigation.

An IPCC spokesman said today: "Following Ms Welsh's death the IPCC managed the Cleveland Police investigation into the incident and a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service who determined that criminal charges were appropriate."
