WE are the action group of parents and carers campaigning against the closure/amalgamation of Heatherfields day centre for adults with learning difficulties.

We had a meeting on February 13 with the adult and children services and a councillor. This was supposed to be a joint consultation meeting.

It turned out to be more of a presentation than a consultation. No one really seemed concerned to listen to our fears regarding this closure.

There were people there representing various charity organisations, etc, plus a direct payments co-ordinator.

This was what the meeting was about, trying to convince us all to take direct payments, which we all know work well for some disabled but not for all.

Our group of disabled family members, our children in most cases, all have profound and multiple disabilities, some with very challenging behaviour, incontinence and wheelchair bound.

Some have autism, all need 24/7 care.

The Government white paper Valuing People states that their objective is to enable people with a learning disability to have as much choice and control as possible over their lives and also over the support and services they receive. …
