THE Lower Clarence has lost a primary industry and community leader with the death this week of former Lower Clarence farmer, John Ensbey.

Mr Ensbey won the Country Life most improved dairy farm of the year title in consecutive years (1964 and 1965) and remains the only person to take the title two years running. He won the North Coast section of the competition again in 1966.

He also served on the Copmanhurst Shire Council, the Lower Clarence County Council, was president of the Clarence River County Council and chaired the Flood Mitigation Authorities of New South Wales.

He was also active with organisations in Lawrence, having served as president of the Lawrence Primary School Parents and Citizens Association and the Lawrence Literary Institute (better known as the Lawrence hall committee). He was a member of the Grafton Mid-day Rotary Club and served one term as president.

His son Philip, who still works on the family farm near Lawrence, said his family had been in the district since 1860. …
