Dam Mobile Reception Wanted before Easter

MAROON Dam recreation park owner Jeff Wall says mobile phone coverage is desperately needed for the area, which will host 1000 tourists this Easter.

The Boonah Chamber of Commerce president said the site's current telecommunications compromised the area's safety.

"If someone breaks their leg or two jet skis collide, the only thing to do is find the caretaker and drive quickly to Boonah Hospital," Mr Wall said.

"By the time you get to the caretaker and call the ambos from a land line, you may as well have driven yourself."

Mr Wall said there were only four phones available around the entire lake, all at camping and recreation parks a short distance from the water's edge.

He said he used to provide a pay phone for boating and camping enthusiasts, but increased fees and vandalism encouraged him to give it away.

"The pay phone got vandalised all the time; kids would pour soft drink inside and ruin the circuitry," he said. …
