Recovering Mason Likely Inclusion for Easing into Roosters Side

RUGBY LEAGUE: Willie Mason looms as a shock late inclusion for the Sydney Roosters' blockbuster NRL season-opener against South Sydney tomorrow.

In a major boost to the Roosters, Mason has been cleared for a return after knee surgery and only needs to convince coach Brad Fittler that he is ready to take to the field.

Mason missed both of the Roosters' finals losses last season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in their last-round win over St George Illawarra.

He has been training solidly in full contact work for the past fortnight and if called upon by Fittler he is likely to be eased back into football off the bench.

Fittler gave little away yesterday when he was asked about the likelihood of Mason playing the Bunnies.

"Mase has been training. I don't think he will play at the moment but he has been training really well and got himself into great shape," said Fittler.

"The sooner (he returns) the better.

"He hasn't knocked on my door yet. …
