MURWILLUMBAH Football Club announced its return to the Gold Coast Soccer First Division with a resounding 3-0 victory over Burleigh Heads at Pizzey Park on Saturday.

"We exceeded our own expectations," player/coach Mick McCarthy said. "The foundation of the win was built on a fantastic never-say-die attitude that went throughout the entire team."

Across the park MFC looked more like seasoned professionals than first division rookies.

A confident performance in goal from 17-year-old debutant, Forest Pearson kept things tight at the back, though a rock solid defensive line snuffed out many chances before the youngster was called upon.

The strength of the back line paved the way for a hard-working midfield to get innovative, and they didn't disappoint, creating several opportunities for the men up front.

A double to in-form striker Darren Reynolds and a third goal to Lucas Scholes put MFC in fourth spot on the ladder after round one. …
