Our View; Don't Forget the Sports Infrastructure

THE Gympie Region has always had an enthusiastic body of sports supporters and athletes, but some of our athletes could probably do with a little more support from the governments to whom their supporters pay taxes.

For some sports, including Football (with the round ball), basketball and many athletic events, the area has much to recommend it.

Endurance horse riders too have some spectacular country to ride through.

A lot of what we have is credit to Gympie's unstoppable community spirit - and the availability of large areas of flood-prone land where facilities can sometimes be built.

The weekend Sports Star awards showcased some of our emerging talent, but we live in an era when population seems to have outstripped all kinds of infrastructure, including sports facilities.

If parents think fitting out their sports loving kids is expensive, perhaps we can all have sympathy for those in government at all levels who are increasingly under pressure to upgrade facilities to a standard which would allow our talented young people the chance to compete more equally. …
