LIFELINE IS PRESERVED; Vital Bus Service Will Not Be Lost

COUNCILLORS in East Cleveland have praised a bus company for its U-turn over services.

There were fears the number 48 bus service, which runs from Redcar to Lingdale, would be cut.

Steve Kay, who represents the Lockwood ward, attended a meeting with an Arriva representative on March 4.

He said: "The impression we got at the committee meeting was that the number 48 service was going to be withdrawn.

"It would have been a disaster - that bus runs to the Hillside Medical Centre in Lingdale and is a lifeline to hundreds of people."

Councillors were left fuming after the meeting, fearing East Cleveland residents would be left stranded.

Councilliors Helen McLuckie, Dave McLuckie and Brian Briggs called the alleged plans "scandalous", saying the proposed cuts would "seriously affect the quality of life for many people in East Cleveland".

Cllr Kay told the Evening Gazette: "You can say what you like about a rumour, but we came out of our committee meeting on March 4 feeling that the number 48 would be cut. …
