A STRONG contingent of hardy Lockyer Valley competitors will be hoping for a home track advantage this weekend when round one of the Queensland Mountain Bike Cross Country Sunshine Series takes place at Adare.

The event is the season opener for cross country racing in south-east Queensland. It should attract a field of more than 200 to the region, as well as a local contingent of about 20.

The Lockyer Valley is quickly gaining a reputation as a breeding ground for young mountain bike racers, with 10 local competitors sprinkled across the under-11, under-13 and under-15 boys and girls classes.

This includes three former and current SEQ or Queensland champions - Nicholas Pinnell, Nathan Cowell and Rebecca Kenny.

Most of the juniors will be making their debut in the under-15 classes at Adare, a move which carries with it a significant step up in race distance, length and overall challenge.

With Adare as their local training venue, they all know the course and its many nuances well. …
