'Hero' Sports Coach Jailed for 12 Months

LIVES and families have been ruined and a Lismore sports coach has been jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to a series of sex offences against two young girls.

The fallen children's "hero", aged 41, was sentenced in Lismore Local Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated act of indecency with a girl aged under 16, and four counts of indecent assault on a girl aged under 10.

Magistrate Jeff Linden ordered a non-publication order on names.

The man was "not a paedophile" according to a psychiatric assessment, as stated by his defence lawyer Peter O'Connor.

Mr Linden sentenced the sportsman to 18 months jail with a non-parole period of 12 months.

Both mothers attended the sentencing, and before a silent courtroom one read aloud her daughter's victim impact statement about the assaults that took place when her daughter was only a little girl of nine.

"For 10 years I never said a thing... when I was young I thought that people would think it was my fault," she read. …
