Old Jail Key to New RSPCA Headquarters

STANDING at the foot of the razor-wired walls of the now defunct John Oxley Detention Centre in Wacol is an imposing experience.

With dust muted windows and vines tangled in the security bars, it is only a few remaining artefacts, like a chequerboard scratched with the names of former residents collecting dust in the corner of a cell, that tell the story of young lives spent behind bars.

But what was once a place of purgatory for youths who had lost their way will soon become salvation for hundreds of neglected and abused animals as the new RSPCA headquarters.

The first sod was turned yesterday, beginning the former detention centre's transformation with Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten saying it was a defining moment for the site.

"If these walls could talk they would tell some pretty terrible stories," Mr Schwarten said.

He said with the cost of demolition and the RSPCA's need for expansion, handing over the $7 million site had become a great opportunity for both parties. …
