Supporting Solution for Flying Foxes; Noise Control Policy Top of Council's List

SOUTHERN Downs Regional councillor Vic Pennisi has delivered a report to council about the first working group aimed at finding a solution to protect crops from flying foxes.

When he spoke in general business at yesterday's Community Services committee meeting he said the group was very well represented.

"It was made quite clear the government wants a solution and are prepared to make money available," Cr Pennisi said.

"Council will have to develop a local law for the noise issue.

"An application is coming to council for the use of hail cannons; it will put us in the hot seat fairly quickly.

"I don't think we'll get a solution in five minutes - I don't think there is going to be a magic cure."

Cr Pennisi said the key part of finding a solution was dealing with the cause of the problem, not the effect.

"The cause is a lack of food for the flying foxes," he said.

"We have asked for a study to be compiled. …
