HANDING Sam Thaiday the Broncos captaincy this weekend makes about as much sense as my grandma's obsession with making home-made pickles that she couldn't pay to give away.

In fact I think the old duck's crazy antics might even make more sense.

In recent times, the 108kg second rower has shown about as much leadership potential as a stray kitten.

Thaiday wooed the media with his heart-wrenching spiel on Wednesday night.

"Now is the time for me to grow up and set a good example - especially for the younger kids," Thaiday said.

"After a few ups and downs, I finally realised I am a leader. A lot of players look up to me. I can't be doing what I'm doing."

But I'm not convinced.

Thaiday is a good footballer.

Despite what the female involved in last year's nightclub sex scandal says, he might even be a nice guy.

But a good role model, maybe not.

Let's not forget the off-field antics that made front-page headlines only six months ago. …
