Howard State School's Year 2 pupils are setting the pace and our future food needs are in wonderful dirty little hands.

Under the guidance of teacher Ian McGregor last year's Year 2s cleaned up the Wide Bay Water Wise Garden competition in conjunction with the Burrum District Garden Club and supplier, All Things Outside.

So extraordinary were the gardening deeds of 14 girls and six boys they pocketed $375 in money and plan making this year's garden endeavours self-sufficient.

Gazing out over the weeds through this week's rain Mr McGregor's enthusiasm was unbounded.

"This year's Year 2s, 6 and 7 year olds, want to get out and start weeding next week.

"It's quite infectious. We've still got pineapples in the ground from last year and egg plant, basil, chillies and parsley."

Mr McGregor, after four years in Howard, is a big believer in youngsters sticking their hands in the earth and seeing what comes out. …
