A Life-Changing Moment for Many; Driver Gets Good Behaviour Bond after Fatal Crash

IT WAS just a quick glance down, but that split second of taking his eyes off the road was a life-changing moment that killed an elderly man and seriously injured Lismore plumber Brentin Mumford.

Mumford pleaded guilty in Lismore Local Court yesterday, his 22nd birthday, to negligent driving causing the death of 70-year-old Ronald Donaghy after their two utes collided head-on at Alphadale on October 8 last year.

Mr Donaghy, a retired dairy farmer from Corndale, was trapped in the wreckage of his Mazda ute and died at the scene.

Mumford broke down with his head in his hands when giving evidence before Magistrate Jeff Linden, saying he had no recollection of the crash.

In police facts he had asked people at the accident scene: "What happened? - I was just looking down and when I looked up, just bang."

Asked by his defence lawyer, Eion Johnston, how he reacted when told a person had died, Mumford replied he became upset. …
