Dale Shearer Fights for Life after Crash

SUNSHINE COAST: Former Mackay and Sarina footballer and later Queensland rugby league legend Dale Shearer was last night fighting for his life after a high-speed car crash on the Sunshine Coast left the 43-year-old in a critical condition in a Brisbane hospital.

The State of Origin great, who lives at Peregian Springs, was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital intensive care unit after his silver Porsche four-wheel drive crashed into an embankment just after 11pm on Saturday.

The police investigation is only in its early stages, but it is understood Shearer was travelling along Walter Hay Drive at speed when he came across a marked police car during a routine patrol heading in the opposite direction.

The officers told investigators Shearer appeared to speed up after seeing their vehicle, but they had to negotiate a roundabout in order to follow him.

By the time the police car changed direction there was no sign of Shearer's vehicle.

The officers continued south-bound and reached Emu Mountain Road, which is part of the Sunshine Motorway, and discovered Shearer's damaged vehicle against an embankment and the driver needing urgent attention. …
