WITH Nikko pens and butchers' paper in hand, Mackay business owners sat down last night and brainstormed ideas to help revitalise the city centre.

About 160 members of Mackay's central business community got together at the City Centre Stakeholder Forum to voice their views, opinions and suggestions for a redevelopment action plan for the CBD.

The forum was held by Mackay Regional Council (MRC) and chaired by Cr Dave Perkins, who spoke about the future directions and growth of the city and town centres.

Mayor Col Meng invited those present to look towards the future.

"Don't be worried about the past, but look at what we can do in the future," he said.

"I don't have a crystal ball but together we can move forward."

Ideas to improve the City Heart included better access to the Pioneer River, with artworks along the river depicting Mackay's history.

Others ideas discussed included more office space, improving the poor condition of shop facades, better lighting at the boat ramp end of Victoria Street and overall safety at night. …
