Spreading a Men's Message; Early Diagnosis Can Save Lives Says Principle

INSPIRATIONAL principal Gary Kirk has lived the nightmare of most Australian men.

The Norville State School principal joined the growing legion of Australians to be diagnosed with prostate cancer when a visit to the doctor uncovered the disease in 2006.

Early detection saved Mr Kirk's life and increased the chance of recovering from the cancer.

But Mr Kirk insisted too many men are suffering from diseases simply because they have not been picked up.

Mr Kirk blames the John Wayne attitude common in many Australian men as the reason behind ignorance of men's health issues.

While initiatives such as Movember have helped raise the awareness about the issues, Mr Kirk insists their is still groundwork to be made.

"We have to get over this mentality Australian men have," Mr Kirk said.

Mr Kirk is one of the first men in Australia to be trained as a Men's Health ambassador for the Federal Government.

He has received training to be able to go to groups of men and explain the dangers they are facing and the best preventions. …
