HE was the man who planted the seeds of Mackay's Catholic community.

And 140 years later, Holy Spirit College has commemorated his life through the naming of their new school hall.

An official opening and blessing of the new hall, which is called The Father Bucas Centre, was held yesterday.

The centre was opened by the Diocesan Director of Catholic Education, Leesa Jeffcoat, and blessed by Bishop of Rockhampton Brian Heenan.

Researcher and English head of department at Holy Spirit, Neridah Kaddatz, said she hoped naming the new hall after Father Bucas would continue his legacy, not only within the school community but also in the wider Mackay community.

"With the help of local historians Berenice Wright, Terry Hayes, Rod Manning and myself we spent many months researching Father Bucas's life and the strong involvement he had here in the Catholic and Mackay communities," Ms Kaddatz said.

"He was a highly respected man, not only in the Catholic community but also in the non-Catholic community," she said. …
