AUSTRALIA'S victory over South Africa in the First Test made up for defeat at the hands of another long-term rival yesterday.

A team led by New Zealand cricket legend Sir Richard Hadlee triumphed over another led by Aussie hero Dean Jones in a trans-Tasman golf challenge at Peregian Springs Golf Club.

The golf day was one of a string of events organised by a group of Peregian friends in aid of the McGrath Foundation, which raises money primarily to fund breast care nurses in rural Australia.

The golf day, combined with a dinner the evening before, as well as preceding events, including a high tea, raised $53,000 for the cause.

The events were the brain child of four couples - Lorraine and Barry Miller, Neville and Beulah Middlewirth, Michael and Vonnie Thompson, and Jeff and Sharon Stevens, who all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer.

Mrs Stevens said they hoped that the money would help the McGrath Foundation to one day be able to fund a breast cancer nurse on the Sunshine Coast. …
