THE glory days of the Bulimba Cup will be re-lived at a special luncheon on Friday, March 20.

Toowoomba has a rich history of rugby league, from the early days of the galloping Clydesdales in the 1920s to the most recent players, competing in and winning the State League competition.

But nothing evoked more interest and passion than the days of the Bulimba Cup competition and the epic matches between Toowoomba, Ipswich and Brisbane.

From 1925 to 1972, everything rugby league in Queensland revolved around the Bulimba Cup.

Over the 46 years, there were many memorable games but none more so than the 1970 final when Toowoomba defeated the might of Brisbane at Toowoomba's Athletic Oval in a nail-biting finish.

Trailing 12-4 at halftime, Toowoomba fought back to get within a point of Brisbane at 17-16 when in the 79th minute, Brisbane referee Dale Coogan whistled a penalty to Toowoomba near the sideline, just over 25 metres out. …
