WHEN it comes to the list of things I can't live without it's always been a pretty small list. I'm a sophisticated modern woman with surprisingly few needs.

Give me a freezer full of vanilla ice-cream, an easy-to-remember PIN number and a new pair of ugg boots every winter and I'm a happy camper.

Throw in a dog that doesn't need washing, kids who understand the concept of using a dirty washing basket, the odd bottle of chardy and block of Cadbury's and you won't hear a peep out of me.

That is until last week.

I now have a new addition to my 'can't live without it list'.

And it doesn't come from the pantry or the Plaza.

It all started with an unexpected renovation incident involving hubby, a jackhammer and the smallest room in the house.

We'd decided to renovate the hallway, which meant ripping up the tatty old carpet and putting in some snazzy new tiles on the floor.

Our one and only loo is at the end of the hallway and we thought it would be a great idea to retile that at the same time.

It stopped sounding like such a great idea when hubby offered to help the tiler remove the old tiles from the smallest room.

The last words I heard hubby say before he turned on the jackhammer were, "Trust me, I know what I'm doing".

The next words I heard were "Don't just stand there, call a plumber".

You guessed it.

While removing the floor tiles and two rows of tiles going up the wall, hubby had managed to put a great big crack in the loo, a crack in the vital piping and a hole in the wall.

A scud missile would have done less damage, and in less time.

When the plumber arrived he just stood there surveying the bombsite - one badly cracked loo, water-soaked towels all over the floor, a broken pipe peeping out of the wall and a cranky woman with her arms and legs crossed. …
