A THOUGHT from the opening night of The Alchemist at Brisbane's Playhouse.

As the invited guests streamed around the corner to the after-show party, there was a photo opportunity for posterity, sadly missed.

On the footpath, framed from above by the light of a streetlamp, stood two doyens of Australian theatre earnestly in conversation.

The towering Bille Brown, noted actor, director and writer, and the more diminutive Michael Gow, artistic director of the Queensland Theatre Company, renowned playwright and director.

A true theatre moment, it was vaguely reminiscent of the classic rugby league image of "the victors", Norm Provan and Arthur Summons.

At The Alchemist we sat next to Carol Burns and her husband, composer Alan Lawrence.

Carol is currently directing actor Bob Newman in The Brink, which will transfer from Metro Arts to The Indee Theatre for a performance on Saturday, April 18.

Carol told me the play is going beautifully. …
