TOOWOOMBA'S Australian women's cricket player Jodie Fields believes it's important for the morale of the game that next week's ICC Women's World Cup is a success.

Fields spoke to The Chronicle after the Australian Southern Stars defeated Sri Lanka in a warm-up game at Manly Oval on Wednesday.

She said both teams had emphasised the need for the World Cup to be a positive event in the wake of the attacks on the Sri Lankan men's team in Pakistan on Tuesday.

"The situation is sad for the families involved and it was definitely a shock to the game," Fields said.

"We have all spoken about it and everyone is trying to get on with it now."

Australia begins its World Cup campaign tomorrow against New Zealand in North Sydney, an opponent Fields believes will be one of the Southern Stars' toughest rivals.

Australia and New Zealand this year played a 2-2 series tie with a fifth game abandoned due to a wash out. …
