IT'S no secret that throughout the world tourism is a highly competitive business. Despite the buoyancy of our visitor numbers overall, Mackay Tourism and Tourism Queensland have recognised that Mackay-Isaac Region must develop more visitor attractions and experiences, along with more accommodation, to achieve growth in numbers and yield.

The State Government has funded feasability studies commissioned by Mackay Tourism for six pivotal developments which are believed (on their completion) will trigger accompanying investment and lead to increased competitiveness and visitor growth for our destination.

The six projects are:

* Development of the Mining Trail - a badged touring route to attract leisure tourism to our hinterland, leading travellers to a wide variety of natural and man-made attractions between Clermont and Hay Point.

* An upmarket eco-resort at the Eungella edge, with accompanying community amenities, to take full advantage of this spectacular location and environment.

* The South Sea islands experience - creating a South Seas village complex to fully showcase the history and culture of this unique and important segment of our community. …
