WARWICKITES and visitors alike swarmed to the annual Warwick Boxing Day races yesterday.

A record crowd of several thousand continued their Christmas celebrations into Boxing Day and duelled with the satchel swingers while catching up with old friends.

Despite the threat of storms and hot weather the crowd enjoyed the top racing and amenities with the challenge of a six race card to back a winner.

Racing began with Hynes Newsagency / Graeme Collins Automotive Maiden over 800m 1200m where prolific country trainer Patrick Sexton saddled up the second favourite Heza Outlaw.

"It was good (the win), was good to see him finally get one," Smith said after the horse won.

"He has only had a couple of races this year; this was his first win for this year.

"I might get back some of that Christmas money."

Owner Phil Muntelwit was feeling "top of the world" about the win.

"We brought him back (to Warwick) to prove how good he was," Muntelwit said.

"He came second last at Caloundra two weeks ago ... this was a very good win.

"We love Warwick, we come every time we can."

The race was named after John Barrett, a former Elders manager here in the sixties and brother of well known country bookmaker Paul Barrett. …
