HALF past nine in the morning, the sun already had a bite to it and it took about 40 minutes to shuffle our way to the front gate, but the excitement of the first day of the Brisbane International tennis tournament was electric.

The first match of the day in the brand-spanking new Pat Rafter Arena was a qualifying match between Australian Chris "The Gooch" Guccione and Amer Delic from the United States.

It was great to see some massive serves from both opponents as the speedometer crept above 200km/h almost every serve, but the downside of this was the lack of point play.

The crowd was satisfied however with the next match to come on against Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Marc Gicquel with energising rallies, serve-volley plays and a few dummy spits to keep it exciting.

The new arena was very impressive and at a few points during the course of match play a noisy crow up in the rafters caused a bit of commotion, annoying a few players concentrating on their serves. …
