Stallholders Market for New Venue

AFTER being a weekend hotspot for Toowoomba residents for 15 years, the Wilsonton Undercover Markets will close for the last time next month, leaving stallholders and loyal patrons out in the cold.

Centre management sent the manager of the markets, Les Clark, a letter last week informing him the last market would be held on Sunday, January 25, 2009.

Centre manager Rachel Mackey declined to comment when contacted by The Chronicle yesterday, however her letter to Mr Clark explained that the markets were no longer beneficial to the centre as a whole.

"We have noticed a 10 per cent decrease this year on last year's traffic and last year was down on previous years and so on," Ms Mackey said in the letter.

"It is no longer a strong traffic generator for the centre," the letter said.

Allan Lawson was instrumental in getting the markets off the ground when Clive Berghofer started the Wilsonton Undercover Markets 15 years ago. …
