Backflip Leaves Town High and Dry; No Help for Yarraman as Water Supply Runs Low

A STATE Government backflip has forced Toowoomba Regional Council to put the proposed purchase of 200 megalitres a year of high-priority water allocations for Yarraman on hold.

Yarraman is 118km north of Toowoomba and was the focus of state-wide media attention early last year as there was a very real threat that the township of 1400 would run out of water.

Former Rosalie Shire Council chief executive officer Clinton Weber said the State Government had committed funding to the project in numerous conversations he had with government officers.

However, Tuesday's council committee meeting heard that Deputy Premier Paul Lucas indicated in a meeting with Mayor Peter Taylor that it would be unlikely that funding would be available.

Since council has not received any State Government funding, it was recommended that the purchase of the high-priority water be postponed.
