Munroe's Single Lifts UF over FSU; the Gators Win a Sloppy Four-Hour Game in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE - Florida junior catcher Buddy Munroe smacked a game-winning single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night, giving the Gators a 5-4 win over Florida State at McKethan Stadium in a game that lasted almost four hours.

"I live for that kind of opportunity," said Munroe, who had a career-high three hits along with two RBI. "I was really looking forward to it coming down to me."

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Florida fans started to chant, "Hit the ball anywhere," and they weren't kidding. Florida State (9-7), which has struggled defensively all year and had 28 errors coming into the game, committed four more errors as the Seminoles fumbled several easy grounders.

After struggling in his previous start (1 1/3 innings, five runs) freshman left-hander Alex Panteliodis struck out five in 4 1/3 shutout innings. His night was the highlight on the mound as the game featured 13 total pitchers, and only Panteliodis lasted more than 2 2/3 innings. …
