THE speed limit along most of the deadly stretch of the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra will be reduced from 100kmh to 90kmh.

Main roads minister Warren Pitt said while it had previously been determined that a 100kmh limit was appropriate, the new limit would be rolled out starting from next week.

It will apply to the road from the Cooroy turnoff to the Wide Bay Highway interchange 10 kilometres north of Gympie - and the current 80kmh-limited high crash zone stretches will remain in place.

Three people and an unborn child were killed on the stretch in a horrifying smash involving three trucks and a car in September and at least 50 people have been killed there since 2000.

Mr Pitt said community concern about the stretch of road led to the decision.

He said a need to reduce dangerous driver behaviour in the area had also played a part.

"It has become evident that more can be done to improve safety on this stretch of road and reduce the number of crashes resulting from excessive speed, failure to drive to the conditions and lack of due care," he said. …
