THE La Balsa Park beach safety net is to be lifted - permanently.

Despite a late 1000-signature petition delivered to yesterday's Sunshine Coast council ordinary meeting, councillors rubber-stamped an earlier committee resolution to remove the Point Cartwright net.

The net protects a popular swimming enclosure that is at the end of a one-year trial.

Save Our Net Committee spokesman Terry Boyce was outraged the council "pretended we did not exist".

Divisional councillor Chris Thompson acknowledged public opinion was split on whether to remove or retain the net.

"It was a full council decision, and I understand some people will be disappointed," he said.

"We weighed up the report and decided that ... (it) close."

Mr Thompson said the council would still be involved in controlling dogs at the beach.

The net was believed by many to keep dangerous marine animals away from the non-ocean beach, particularly as a fishery was located nearby, up the Mooloolah River. …
