Brisbane Pipped as Retirees' Host

THEY have come by plane, car and, of course, by caravan.

More than 200 self-funded retirees have descended on Caloundra for the 14th biennial Association of Independent Retirees National Conference, which opened last night at the events centre.

While conference subjects include everything from alternative energy sources to the legal aspects of retirement villages, the weekend is not all business, with participants also sampling the best the Coast has to offer.

River cruising, hinterland tours, whale watching and an Australia Zoo visit are all optional agenda options.

Sunshine Coast AIR division president and conference chairwoman Helen Sava said the conference would address a range of issues relevant to retirees and, in particular, was relevant to fully or partially self-funded retirees.

"It is an interesting and diverse range of speakers: a very extensive program," she said.

Speakers include BT Financial Group's chief economist Dr Chris Caton, federal minister for superannuation and corporate law Nick Sherry and the CSIRO's principal research scientist Dr Simon Toze. …
