NATIONAL Butchers' Week aims to encourage consumers to think of their local butcher as the first port of call when buying meat.

The event, which has the backing of MasterChef presenter John Torrode, finishes tomorrow, but the message is one that holds true throughout the year.

North East FARMA accredited farm shops in the region raise, process and butcher their livestock, which offers complete traceability to customers.

These shops, Blagdon and Moor House near Stannington, Northumberland, and Broom House and Low Fields near Durham, employ highly skilled butchers to ensure the finest of meats, pies, pates and sausages.

Blagdon is offering tastings of sausages. Anyone who orders a chicken or guinea fowl for Mother's Day or Easter weekend will receive their accompanying vegetables free.

HEXHAM-BASED Fentimans has launched its botanically brewed tonic water in a four-pack, with your money back if you don't like it.
