AN engine starved of fuel sent a charter plane carrying four passengers - including a Sunshine Coast couple - plunging into the ocean after leaving Brampton Island last year.

Henry and Nina Lewczuk, who work together at Mooloolaba Real Estate, were on their way back to the Coast after holidaying on the island when the Australasian Jet charter plane crashed on April 3.

Findings from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation praised the quick thinking of Mackay pilot Kate English, 20.

The report said the loss of engine power on the Piper Cherokee 6 was "consistent with fuel starvation".

RACQ-CQ Rescue responded to a mayday call at 2.15pm, arriving on scene about 30 minutes later and winching up the passengers and pilot.

Ms English was widely referred to as a hero after she landed the plane carefully on waters near Squeaky Beach, Carlisle Island, allowing herself and passengers to evacuate before the plane was completely submerged. …
