LOCAL students who received their HSC and UAI results this month should not be put off by all the attention on the global financial crisis.

Australia still has a skills shortage and low unemployment rate, which means there are still plenty of opportunities for HSC leavers to find a job that suits them.

A new survey of almost 20,000 businesses by the NSW Business Chamber's apprenticeship services arm, Australian Business Limited Apprenticeship Centre (ABLAC), has shown a strong increase in the hiring intentions of business.

The survey revealed more than half of the businesses who responded indicated they intend hiring additional apprentices in the coming year - up a massive 150 per cent on 12 months ago.

Businesses are mindful of the potential 'double whammy' in the skills shortage areas if they fail to train now and the economy starts to pick up again.
