MORE than 100 Mackay hospital workers chanted "don't contract our jobs" and "health can't operate without us".

Australian Workers Union (AWU) Mackay delegate Angela Spooner yesterday voiced the concerns of fellow workers at the old Town Hall park at Sydney Street at the stop work action rally.

Ms Spooner spoke about negotiations on pay and working conditions.

"The increases in the cost of mortgage, rent, groceries and fuel is a strain," Ms Spooner said.

"The (low) offer of 3.25 per cent is too big a pill for these families to swallow," she said.

The State Government offered a 3.25 per cent wage increase to all employees across the public sector for the next round of enterprise bargaining negotiations.

Ms Spooner said that when the hospital contracted jobs it was not bound to replace workers by a given time or at all.

"Which means the hospital can take as long as it likes or never replace the worker - which increases the workload of existing workers," she said. …
