ALSTONVILLE had hoped to celebrate promotion to the premier league next year by claiming the first division premiership double but South Lismore refused to follow the script and upset Villa 1-0 in the grand final at Oakes Oval, Lismore, on Saturday.

Villa were hot favourites after going through the season undefeated, but an early goal from Souths striker Dylan Clifford proved to be enough to spoil their promotion party.

While Alstonville had plenty of chances to equalise as the game went on, they paid the price for poor finishing, including a penalty that was skied over the bar.

The Celtics repeated the dose in the first reserve division grand final, downing Villa 3-1 to take out the premiership double.

Alstonville faces a lot of work or a lot of recruiting to be competitive in the premier league next year, while South Lismore appear to be next in the queue for promotion.

Richmond Rovers' enormous depth was on display in the second and third division grand finals, with both sides wrapping up premiership doubles. …
